Friday 2/10 - Arrive in Hawaii

Arrive at Kona Airport and get transportation to North Kohala/ Kohala Center/Iole

We will be staying at the Iole Stewardship Center: https://www.iolestewardshipcenter.org/bungalows/

Saturday 2/11

We will start the day by visiting the Hawaii Farmers Market and then we will picnic in Polulu Valley. 

In the evening we will attend a presentation and concert by Grammy award-winning Hawaiian musician, John Keawe (https://johnkeawe.com/)

Then we will get a hula lesson from the master hula dancer, Kumu Hope Keawe. 

Our dinner will be prepared by the Kohala Center with local ingredients from the Hawaii Institute of Pacific Agriculture. 

Sunday 2/12

During the day we will enjoy a beach picnic.

We will spend the evening on Mauna Kea at The Onizuka Center for International Astronomy Visitor Information Station (VIS) at the 9,200 foot (2,804 meter) level, where Dr. John Hagelin will provide insights into deep space phenomena.

Monday 2/13

We will start the day off by snorkeling.

Then we will visit the Makali’i Hawaiian voyaging canoe and enjoy a discussion on sustainability in ancient and modern  Hawaii.

Tuesday 2/14

Today we will drive the Hamakua coast to Hilo. Along the way, we will stop for a hike on the white road trail and stop at the Waipio Valley Overlook for a discussion about Hawaiian culture with Hawaiian elders.

Wednesday 2/15

We will start the day off by visiting the Hilo Farmers Market (the best on the islands) and free time to walk around the town of Hilo. 

In the afternoon we will visit with Kaliko Beamer a professor of Hawaiian studies at UH Hilo.  He will give us a lesson in the Hawaiian language and culture through music. Kaliko is the brother of Keola Beamer.   

 In the evening, Uncle Roberts will give a talk on ohana, music, and food.

Thursday 2/16

Today we will visit the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park with a Hawaiian elder and a UH Hawaiian Religion professor. We will also have a chance to wade in the volcanic hot springs.

Friday 2/17

Today we will start the trip back around the island. Along the way, we will visit Punalu’u black sand beach with sea turtles, see the city of refuge, and attend a coffee farm in South Kona. 

Our evening will be spent back in North Kohala. 

Saturday 2/18

Today you have a free morning to do whatever you want. 

In the evening we will have a night swim with manta rays. 

Sunday 2/19

Today we will be hiking and swimming in the ancient village on the North Kona Coast. There will also be the option to paddle board or surf in Kona Bay. 

Additionally, we will have some free time in Kona to explore. 

Monday 2/20

Today will depart Hawaii and return to the Mainland.
